Beginner's Guide to Niche Keyword Research
Hey Guys, I'm writing this post as a beginner's guide to Niche Keyword Research. Feel free to ask questions and I'll answer them to the best of my ability. If you're not a beginner, this probably isn't the right guide for you (so no groans please), but it might be a nice refresher. NICHE: Macro niches- These are niches that are broad and usually VERY difficult to dominate. Examples: Health, Beauty, Finances, Real Estate, etc... Because they are such broad terms, I never bother with them. Micro Niches- These are where the money is for most Im'ers. (I'll stick with the "health" macro through this entire guide as an example.) A good example would be "dieting" or "weight loss" or "vitamins". Just think of micro niches as sub-categories. There are some amazing golden micro niches, but at the same time, many of these micro niches may still be too broad. Double Micro Niche- This is taking it one step further... Something like "low carb diet" or "fat burning foods" or "lose weight naturally"... Going with niches like these will cut your competition considerably and you will never run out of opportunities! Five main things to take into consideration when you are choosing your keyword are: interest, expertise, competition, desire, and profit. 1) Interest- If you find the niche boring, why would you want to spend your time marketing it? 2) Expertise- If you don't know anything about the niche, why would you bother with it? Unless you want to look at is as a learning experience and something you WANT to know about. 3) Competition- Obviously, less competition = more money for you! This is a crutial step and if you don't take the time to do your research properly here, you will regret it. 4) Desire- Make sure that it is something people want! If there is no desire for a product, then there is no money to be made. 5) Profit- This is the best part! You want to make sure that there is money to be made in your niche. The first obvious thing to check is that there is an affiliate program or you have the ability to buid a product around it. BASIC RESEARCH TOOLS: 1) Google Adwords Tool - Almost always your best first step. 2) WordTracker. Another great tool, though not nearly as exhaustive as google. 3) SEOBook has an amazing tool that give you a huge amount of tools to work with. It is almost a one stop keyword tool and definitely worth the time to look over. You can find it at: 4) Blogs and Forums- Visit blogs and forums by searching in google "blog + niche" or "forum + niche". It's a great way to get inside your target audience's head and figure out what they need/want and also can be a great way to research content. KEYWORDS: So by now you should have a good broad list to go from. I like lists of at least 200 keywords. Out of that you should get at least 25 quality low-competition keywords to work with. Using WordTracker or SEOBook Keyword tool, try and narrow your list down to keywords getting a daily search that is decent. If your keyword has 300 or more daily searches, it probably has some stiff competition... I like to stay around 100 searches per day. Though if you are brand new to the business, 50 per day will be much easier for you to dominate. That means you only need 7 quality keywords to be dominating 10,000 searches per month! As for the best way to check out your competition... It's easier than you think! Just to do a simple search. Use: allintitle:"keyword" in the google search bar to find out. This search will yield specific results that will show you your TRUE competition.... not just who used the keyword in their content. I never use keywords that have more than 50,000 websites as competition... Again, if you're starting out... cut that number in half. Remember earlier when I said that you needed to check out your competition? Well this is the perfect opportunity to do so.... If your "allintitle" search revealed that the first few pages are full of high PR sites, just walk away. If the search is filled with less than PR3 sites, dominate away! The trick to keywords is really just making it easy for you in the long run. Once you've got the experience under your belt you can start going for the more competitive niches and scale your operation up! P.S. If this guide goes over well, I'll do more of them. |
